Our ultimate rug placement guide to add a chic twist to your living space
A gorgeous, fluffy sheepskin rug can add warmth, colour, and style to any home. Whether you're decorating your bedroom, living room, or even entry hallway, a rug can be a simple and cost-effective way to add a chic twist to your living space.
The big question is "what's the perfect rug placement for each space?"
We know rug placement can be tricky, but never fear. In this article, we share our ultimate rug placement guide to enhance your interior design. Read on!
Getting Started
Before buying a brand new rug, the first thing you'll need to do is measure the living space, consider the layout of the room, and decide what kind of aesthetic you would like.
Consider the current look and theme of the room, as well as the needs of your family or space. This will help make purchasing a new rug quick and simple!
Covered & Anchored
Once your new sheepskin rug has arrived, it's time to figure out rug placement.
We recommend keeping your rug at least 30 - 90cm away from the walls as this will ensure your space feels secure, yet spacious.
Keep Two Furniture Legs on the Rug
To keep your rug secure on the floor, we recommend placing at least two furniture legs on the rug to create a solid foundation. This will also help prevent trips and slips.
Rug Placement in the Bedroom
You want the rug to anchor the space (i.e. give definition to the area with the right rug placement in the bedroom).
Your rug should be in front of the nightstands - not under. Try not to extend their length and ensure there's space to breathe on each side of the bed.
Round vs Square Rug
Rectangular or square rugs might be more traditional, but their sharp, angular shapes are great for adding definition to a living space.
On the other hand, a round rug can add a lovely softness to the room. The choice is yours - you can use our rug placement guide any way you like based on the design of your home.
Small Space vs Large Space
In a small space, placing a rug in front of a sofa can make the room appear lighter and more spacious. This also gives you visual separation between the sofa and side tables.
In a big open-plan space, however, the rug should sit under the front legs of the sofas.
If you have chairs in the space as well, then the front legs of the chair should be touching or "hovering" on the rug. This placement creates a cosy zone without closing off the area to the rest of the room.
