Did you know that every hour, 3000 Australians face becoming homeless?
The stats speak for themselves - the homelessness crisis in Australia needs to change. Every hour, 3,000 people in Australia seek help from homelessness services like those provided by Mission Australia (AIHW 2022). That’s 3,000 Australians. 3,000 stories every hour. And in the recent Census, more than 122,000 people are homeless on any given night which was an increase of 5.2% since the Census in 2016.

“Australia’s homelessness crisis has been exacerbated by the long-term absence of a serious and sizeable commitment to building new social and affordable homes. Safe and secure housing provides a stable base from which children can attend school, adults can work, people can be healthy and communities can thrive.” Mission Australia in response to the Census data, 2023.
Thousands of people experiencing homelessness are living in precarious situations, forced to sleep in severely overcrowded dwellings, on a couch at a friend’s house, or even one of the 6% who are rough sleeping.
In the last 5 years, there has been an increase of 12% of children under the age of 19 who are homeless on any given night which amounts to 28,948 children and there’s 17, 646 children under the age of 12 who are homeless. These children don’t have the stability of a safe home and too many are missing out on education and other opportunities to thrive.
